What wear and float are
Every skin has a float — a number from 0 to 1 that shows how worn the pattern is. It puts the skin into one of five wear levels:

The higher the float, the more scuffs, scratches and missing paint. But wear shows differently on different skins: on some it's barely visible even in BS, on others the pattern fades already in FT.
Not every skin has all five wear levels. Doppler, Fade and Marble Fade only come in FN and MW, while the AWP | Asiimov is the opposite — only FT, WW and BS.
How much the difference costs
A few examples of how the price of one skin changes:
- AK-47 | Asiimov — FN $284, MW $49.1, FT $39.4. Factory New costs several times more because it's rare.
- M4A1-S | Nightmare — FN $209, MW $20.8, FT $8.4.
- Driver Gloves | King Snake — FN $2,013, FT $123, BS $88.4.
- AWP | Asiimov — FT $99.1, WW $79, BS $71.1.
Where FT and lower are totally fine
- Dark and matte skins. On black, camo and dark patterns scuffs are barely visible. Field-Tested is the best balance of price and look here.
- Gloves. You see them every round, but in fast gameplay the difference between FT and MW is barely noticeable, while the price differs a lot.
- Pistols and secondary weapons. You hold them less often, so FT or even WW is a fine choice.
- Skins where wear is part of the style. Some patterns actually look better worn, with a "battle" feel.
Where not to save
- Bright white and light skins. Wear shows the most on white — Asiimov, Printstream and similar patterns get dirty patches in WW and BS.
- Your main weapon. You see your AK, M4 or AWP almost all the time — the FT vs MW difference is more visible than on a pistol.
- Skins that lose their key element. On some patterns high wear erases the main detail — check screenshots of that exact wear before buying.
